Kitchen Basics - Staying Sharp

A quick way to keep happy in the kitchen

I was watching a YouTube video I stumbled on about knife skills last week that had good points. It struck me that one critical area I felt needed more attention is keeping your knives sharpened. I am not going to give a sharpening lesson right now, but I it is an easy and important habit to develop. It will enhance your experience in the kitchen.

What am I talking about? We spend a great deal of time cutting ingredients to prepare a meal or recipe. Knowing how to hold a knife properly and using a rocking motion are both critical, but a dull knife will still cause frustration and take away from the benefits of doing the other things right.

Slicing will be slower, more difficult and the likelihood of cutting yourself will be greater. Whenever you reach for a knife also grab the sharpening stick or another knife. Just 6 strokes on either side of the blade will make an incredible difference and give you an “edge” in your cutting and slicing!
